Celebrating over 30 years
Backyard parties are some of the most uplifting gatherings that people host. There’s nothing quite like gathering your friends together for dinner, drinks, and maybe even some lawn games on a cool summer evening.
If the right setup doesn’t go into place first, though, the space can feel like a desert and quietly suck the energy from the party and its attendees. But not to worry–there are some inexpensive and easy tricks to keep things feeling fluid. Let’s talk about some things you can do to set up your space so you and your friends can party in backyard heaven.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to prepare for a great backyard party is to set up multiple conversation spaces with multiple tables and sets of chairs , instead of making everybody sit at one long table, cafeteria-style. This way, people can mill about and keep mixing as the party goes on. They can also talk with whoever they want without yelling across everybody else.
Another classic idea is to set up a pagoda or gazebo. You can buy portable ones that are meant to be set up and torn down (relatively) easily, or you can have a permanent one built on a little foundation in your yard. This is a bear of a job for the average homeowner, but actually pretty quick and easy for an experienced construction company. Consider this especially if you want to make backyard parties more of a regular thing in your life.
Ice: You can buy bags of it on the morning of your backyard party and deal with thwacking it into usable chunks or, if you have an ice maker in your freezer, start filling some zip-top bags with ice, say a week before. It works better and it’s free!
Bugs: Besides people, mosquitos are definitely the creatures that like to party in backyards the most. Since your backyard party will probably at least last until dusk–the mosquitoing hour–it will help to have a bug-proofing plan in place that doesn’t involve spraying everyone with strong-smelling poison. Try bug-repellent candles or bug bracelets.
Any nonessential item that’s built into your backyard will make the space feel more inviting and festive. The pagodas and gazebos we mentioned earlier are perfect examples; another good one is a water feature with–this is important– running water. Still water is every mosquito’s happy place. Look into embedding speakers for soft music too!
The dream doesn’t come together all at once. Think about how you want your backyard party to look and maybe even write down ideas as they come to you. Start early so there’s no rush and plenty of time for any minor construction projects or installations that you think will really make the space pop.
