Celebrating over 30 years
Can you use exterior paint for your indoor project? It might be tempting, but it’s not a good idea. Let’s unpack why.
We all know that exterior paint is made to last, so it's understandable to think it could make for a durable indoor option too. After all, some of our interior surfaces experience more “natural” disasters than our exteriors, especially if kids are involved…
But here’s the thing: as professional painters, we've seen firsthand how proper paint selection can impact air quality, safety, and the longevity of your project. So before you pick up that can of exterior paint for an indoor job, let’s explore why interior paints are specifically formulated for the spaces you live in—and why they’re always the better option.
The difference between “exterior” and “interior” on paint cans is actually a meaningful distinction. Each type is carefully crafted to meet specific environmental demands and serve its own purpose. Here’s a closer look at what sets them apart.
Exterior paints typically contain higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to improve durability and weather resistance. VOCs are chemicals that off-gas into the air during and after painting. In outdoor applications, this off-gassing dissipates relatively quickly. Indoors, however, high VOC levels can lead to poor air quality, irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, and even long-term respiratory issues.
For indoor projects, low-VOC or zero-VOC interior paints are essential to maintaining a healthy environment.
Exterior paints also include additives like mildewcides and UV-resistant chemicals. While these enhance outdoor performance, they can pose health risks in confined spaces. These additives may emit strong odors and chemical fumes, which can linger in poorly ventilated areas, causing discomfort or potential harm to residents.
With that said, here’s a breakdown of why we do not recommend exterior paint inside:
Thankfully exterior paint isn't the only kind of paint to choose from! Interior paints (as the name implies) are designed for optimal coverage, durability, AND air quality indoors. They dry faster and emit fewer harmful fumes–and that keeps everyone safe.
Living in Oregon comes with its own set of challenges when it comes to home maintenance. The state's wet and often humid climate can create even bigger issues for painting, like limited ventilation, or longer drying times. This makes selecting low-VOC interior paints not just a preference but a necessity for maintaining a healthier indoor environment.
Choosing high-quality, durable paints ensures that your walls not only stand up to the demands of Oregon's climate but also continue to look fresh and vibrant for years to come.
