Of course, the best way to make a beach house exterior is to wrap it around a beach house interior
. Sadly, not all of us have our interiors on beaches so, if we dig that aesthetic, we have to create it where we are.
Any professional construction company will have its own ideas, but below, we’ll get into some basic ideas to evoke that distinctly beach house exterior no matter how close it is to a shoreline, especially with respect to coastal paint colors. After that, we’ll drool for a moment over some amazing modern beach houses.
The various shades of white are still the most popular colors for houses everywhere, but especially on beaches. It’s just eternally bright and cheerful. The great thing about a beach house is that it’s on the beach. You get to just look up at any time and see the ocean. Thus, wraparound porches are a wonderful addition to any beach house exterior. Even if you don’t have a beach to look at, the aesthetic is wonderfully calming and warm and will make you feel like making your porch a more frequently used living area.
Create shady spots around the exterior of the house with woven or bamboo shutters and blinds. They’re inherently more interesting than their “normal” counterparts and because they can be seen from the outside, they lend a perfect touch of thoroughness to your beach house exterior theme.
Coastal paint colors tend to be pale because beach air has a lot of sand and salt in it, both of which cause paint to fade faster. This utilitarian choice created an aesthetic that’s instantly recognizable on any beach house exterior. If you don’t go with white, try a pale blue, yellow, or even pink, which is also called coral.
Creative use of wood and windows can make an incredible modern beach house exterior. Other than that, a modern beach house often looks just like a modern house from anywhere. But again, like above, the materials should look like they came from nature–wood, bamboo, etc. And the windows should be huge. Floor-to-ceiling windows are a wonderful trend right now, especially for beach houses.
Paint that house white or a pale color and be liberal when you explore accent colors, especially if you go with white. Invest in a wraparound porch if you can; they’re luxurious whether you live in a beach house or not and they certainly help your home’s resale value. Finally, insist on those huge windows to see your beach with and go for woody and/or woven materials for blinds and shutters.
