Celebrating over 30 years
Why do you want to remodel your house?
That’s it. That’s where to start.
Just like all the other times you’ve done difficult things, the main thing that will carry you through the hard parts is your set of reasons for putting yourself through this experience.
Popular reasons have to do with increasing a home’s resale value, children arriving or departing, and simply evolving lifestyles. But really, it doesn’t matter what anyone else was thinking when they invited strangers into their home to change it; what matters is why you’re moving this idea through your brain tubes and into reality.
But your core reason or two or three for all this room remodeling will do more than just carry you through the challenges. They also determine what home renovations get done. After all, nobody ever said, “We’re having a baby so we thought it was really important to change our chimney from brick to stone.”
So make a list of your minimum objectives for this project, the ones that are important enough that you’re going to make sure this actually happens. But also make a list of your nice-to-haves and your dream upgrades; you never know what may turn out less expensive than it used to be. This will also help your contractors understand your personal style, reasoning and hopes for the remodel!
Finally, figure out where the money is going to come from–there are more home improvement financing options than one might think–and then, make a budget. This is, of course, another major determinant of what home renovations end up coming to pass. Once you have your whys leading to your whats , the project’s budget is the first how.
Make sure to hold at least 10% of your comfortable budget back to pay for unexpected complications. Nobody likes them, but they happen and it’s best to be prepared.
Once you decide on a contractor, start planning your way through the day-to-day realities of your remodel. Ask what wisdom and recommendations your contractor might have. They’ve been through this before; they’ve seen what usually helps their homeowners the most. This could be something as elementary as finding a folding table and a reasonably priced portable stove to use in the living room while a kitchen gets remodeled.
For the duration of the project, you’re going to have strangers milling about a full-on construction site (or two or three), inside your house. How to make that as comfortable as it can be is a question worth spending some thought on.
Especially if you’ve never been through any home renovations of this magnitude before, getting some feedback from an industry professional can make the whole thing seem less crazy and intimidating. Not every question can be Googled; some things can only get clearer from actual conversation. Give us a call –with a little luck, it’ll be the first step of a proud, positive experience with your home!
