Looking to create some extra room in your home? The answer is probably right under your feet.

Around 200,000 new houses were built with some sort of basement, in 2016. In fact, basements are gaining in popularity.

If you’ve got the extra space, we’ve got basement refurbishment tips you can’t ignore. Keep reading to find out how to make it the best room in the house!

The Planning Stage

Before you even pick up a hammer, sketch your ideas out. You don’t want to rush into a project like this without a game plan.

First, figure out what you want your basement to be. Is it going to be an extra room for the kids? Your spare office? A wine cellar?

Once you’ve got the main idea, you’ll know where you want walls to go up or electrical outlets to be.

Waterproofing

Here’s where you also assess if there’s any water damage. Add the cleanup costs to your budget if you find the first hints of it.

A good first step for your basement refurbishment project is to make the floor waterproof. Use an epoxy sealants to keep the basement dry.

Make sure you incorporate a polyurethane vapor barrier on the walls as well. Speaking of walls…

Walls and Insulation

Once you get to the framing stage, you’ll start to set up your walls out of 2 by 4s. Here’s where your basement refurbishment sketches start to become real.

Besides walls, use framing to cover up unsightly ductwork, making sure to allow access for later. You can also cover up basement poles for a more finished look.

Don’t forget to add insulation as needed, too!

Electrical

When you’re about halfway done with framing, start to plan out where you want your wall outlets.

Installing the electrical grid downstairs can be expensive, so keep that in mind when you’re deciding where to put outlets.

Plumbing

Just like electrical, this is a bit expensive and a bit difficult, but essential.

You need access to any pipes in the house. You’ll also need to make sure to keep your basement dry and clean.

Does your basement refurbishment include a bathroom? If so, plumbing becomes even more tricky. Get it right, though, and you’ll be set for extended periods of basement enjoyment!

Drywall

Drywall is heavy, dusty, and hard to work with. If your basement is small enough, you might consider doing it yourself.

If you’ve got a lot of room to work with, it might be best to call in the professionals for this one section.

Painting and Flooring

Next you’ll have to paint your basement. Just make sure you pick out the right color.

The final touch on your design is laying the floor. Laying tile or staining the floor is pretty simple, but if you’re going with carpet, call in the pros.
