5 New Home Trends That Will Dominate 2018

May 25, 2018

What are the new home trends that are dominating 2018?

Oregonians tend to embrace practicality rather than the latest trends. Yet, there are a few trends this year that are worth a try.

It is possible to be practical, functional, and stylish at the same time.

Keep reading to learn what 2018 home trends you should pay attention to!

1. Velvet Makes a Comeback

Velvet is back. What’s old has become one of the hottest new home trends.

It used to be seen as old-fashioned and tacky. Now, designers are incorporating velvet in their projects. You’ll see velvet furniture, curtains, and pillows.

Yes, you can get a velvet sofa if you want. It’s back in style.

The best part is that it’s not limited to the holiday season or fall. You can have velvet throughout the year.

2. Heavy Metal

Metals are in for 2018. If you’re thinking stainless steel, think again. Copper is in, along with brass, nickel iron and rose gold.

These metals can give a vintage look and they’re easy to maintain.

If you’re looking for vintage metals, check out Habitat for Humanity’s Restore stores. They have locations in Portland and Salem.

3. Colors Get Bold

An interesting trend among home designers is the use of bright and bold colors as accents. In 2018, the Pantone color of the year is Ultraviolet.

While some of the homes around Hawthorne and Alberta Street in Portland already have Ultraviolet as the exterior color, you can use it in subtle ways.

For example, in a room with a natural look, you can add pillows or a splash of color on the walls to make the room pop. They’ll add a little brightness to the room.

Even if you prefer to have an all-white room, adding a little bit of bright color can add more personality to the room.

4. Nature is Inside

Home designers are incorporating nature as much as they can. Natural lighting and materials are in use in homes throughout the area.

Combined with copper, brass, and other natural metals, stone finishes can give your home a timeless look.

You’ll see stone and concrete in homes. You may also see animal print styles in homes for additional textures. The most common places you’ll see them are on the floor and on the sofa.

5. Outdoor Living Spaces

In Oregon, you only get so many sunny days a year. A comfortable outdoor living space with sustainable landscaping is important to homeowners.

About 60% of consumers want to make their outdoor spaces more comfortable. That can be done by repairing your patio or adding additional colors to the outdoor space.

If the space is enclosed, creating accents with warm colors can make the space bright and comfortable even when the sun isn’t out.

Are You Ready for New Home Trends?

In 2018, new home trends are moving away from white minimalist designs. Instead, you’re going to see more natural colors and materials.

By adding bold accents throughout your home, you’re adding your personality and creativity to the home as well.

Creating a welcoming, clean, and safe environment is central to maintaining healthcare and retirement homes in the Willamette Valley. These spaces are more than buildings; they’re where residents and patients find care and comfort. So, every detail in the physical environment, from the lighting to the layout, should reflect your commitment to their well-being. One key yet often overlooked detail? Interior painting. When done thoughtfully, it goes far beyond aesthetics—it shapes the atmosphere, reinforces safety, and contributes to a sense of care that’s felt by everyone who walks through the door. Understanding the Needs of Healthcare and Retirement Homes It goes without saying: healthcare and retirement facilities have unique painting needs that go beyond aesthetics. High-traffic areas experience regular wear and tear, and frequent cleaning can cause paint to degrade faster than in typical environments. Additionally, maintaining a sanitary and safe environment is paramount. This is why painting should not only be about beautification but also about durability and hygiene. Seasonal painting schedules allow healthcare and retirement homes to address their most critical areas—like hallways, communal spaces, and entryways—at the right time, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum effectiveness. Seasonal Painting Considerations It’s all about having a predictable maintenance plan, simplifying your to-do list and keeping your facility looking its best throughout the year. 1. Spring/Summer: Refreshing the Exterior and Common Areas Spring and summer are ideal seasons for tackling exterior painting projects. The mild weather conditions mean paint will dry faster, and there’s less risk of moisture interfering with the application. Also consider brightening up communal spaces, such as dining areas and lounges. This can lift spirits and provide a fresh, inviting atmosphere. Seasonal colors like pastels or light neutrals can help create a calm and pleasant environment for residents. Summer into early fall is an ideal time for exterior painting too. The lower chances of rain and consistent temps allow for larger projects to be completed faster and with less interference from the weather. 2. Fall/Winter: Focus on Interior Updates The cooler months are ideal for tackling interior projects. During fall and winter, healthcare and retirement homes often operate at a more predictable pace, making it a good time to schedule interior painting updates without significantly disrupting daily routines. Winter is a great time to refresh patient rooms, hallways, and bathrooms with more durable finishes that can withstand regular cleaning.
